Axi-Rad Thermoplastic Threaded Fastener Retention Device
Axi-Rad is a thermoplastic retainer designed to capture threaded fasteners in position on component parts until final fastening operations are performed later in the assembly sequence. Using a patented lobular design, Axi-Rad helps the fastener stay in place during shipping and handling so the module or component arrives ready to place and tighten at final assembly.
Axi-Rad can be supplied in bulk or assembled onto the customer’s bolt by Forest City Technologies. When Forest City Technologies performs the assembly, customers receive a more complete fastener solution that can help reduce handling requirements and simplify downstream production.
How Axi-Rad Works
Axi-Rad is assembled onto a bolt, and the bolt with Axi-Rad is inserted into the mating hole in the component or casting. Once installed, the retainer holds the fastener in position through shipment and handling. At final assembly, the fastener is already located with the component and ready for the final tightening operation.
Key Benefits
- Helps eliminate fastener feeding from final assembly.
- Improves productivity by moving fastener handling off the final assembly line.
- Helps eliminate the cost of carrying fastener inventory at the final assembly plant.
- Reduces downtime and maintenance associated with automated fastener feeding systems.
- Supports component shipment with fasteners already retained in position.
- Can be sold in bulk or assembled onto the customer’s bolt by Forest City Technologies.
Common Axi-Rad Applications
- Oil pans
- Valve covers
- Alternators and generators
- Water pumps
- Electronic devices
- Automotive powertrain and body assemblies
- Aerospace, heavy truck, industrial equipment, and consumer product assemblies
Design and Application Guidance
- A chamfered hole should be used to prevent sharp edges from shaving the retainer and to support easier assembly into the hole.
- The insertion hole should be clean and free of debris and oily residue to support proper function.
- No contact should be made between the bolt and dunnage during shipping to help prevent movement of the bolt and retainer from their installed position.
- Use with full-bodied fasteners is preferred.
- Fasteners should be fully located in the hole when received at the plant.
